These majestic African-inspired walking sticks represented fences, barriers, and protection in the acclaimed “In Mixed Company” exhibit. They are African scepters to protect and to exalt. They are emblems of nobility and instruments of battle and ritual. Adorned with cockle-burs that represent Black hair and adorned with beads & glass shards representing Black “diamonds”, they represent the beauty of the African spirit of “the motherland”. They suggest peaceful resolutions to human conflict and inspire us in that direction. We were all born with the capacity to love. By understanding the beauty and peace represented in these majestic pieces, we can’t help but feel the love that each of these received from Willie.
